Pound Ridge Historian
Johanna O’Keeffe
Originally from Orange County, NY and a Pound Ridge resident since 2014, Hanna is an archaeologist with a BA and MA in Historical Archaeology from Cornell University and a PhD in Geochemical Archaeology from University College Dublin, Ireland. Her research has focused on the use of soil phosphate analysis within archaeology as a non-invasive tool for site identification and mapping; in this capacity, she has contributed to UCD’s research projects at Glendalough and at the UNESCO World Heritage Site Brú na Bóinne. Hanna’s excavation experience includes sites ranging from Bronze Age roundhouses, early medieval ecclesiastical sites, and famine villages in Ireland to French and Indian War fortifications and abandoned Civil War-era settlement sites in New York State. She has also worked as an excavation supervisor for Cornell’s Enfield Falls Project and the Achill Archaeological Field School in Co. Mayo, Ireland, and she currently works part time as a principal investigator for contract archaeology projects in the western Hudson Valley. Hanna is a member of the Society for Historical Archaeology and the Registry of Professional Archaeologists and joined the PRHS board in 2023. Along with PRHS president Joanne Mineo and archivist Emmett O’Keeffe, Hanna has been examining Pound Ridge’s Stone Hill Cemetery and has plans to broaden the scope of that study soon. Hanna is particularly interested in exploring early settlement patterns within Pound Ridge in the hopes of adding depth to the ways in which we interpret our past and looks forward to contributing to our unique community.
