PRHS Annual Meeting

The Pound Ridge Historical Society invites you to our annual meeting on Sunday, April 27, at 1 PM at Conant Hall. This gathering is a wonderful opportunity to stay connected with the Society and learn about all we’ve accomplished over the past year. We’ll review our events, share updates on preservation efforts, discuss our budget, and reflect on our role as the keeper of the town’s memories.

Following the meeting, we invite you to the grand opening of our latest exhibit, Then and Now in Pound Ridge, in our newly renovated museum. This special exhibit showcases the evolution of Pound Ridge, highlighting the changes in our landscape, architecture, and daily life over time. Be among the first to explore this fascinating journey through history! We look forward to welcoming you.

Nature & History Walk with the Pound Ridge Land Conservancy

Nature & History Walk with the Pound Ridge Land Conservancy

Join the Pound Ridge Historical Society and the Pound Ridge Land Conservancy for a guided short hike exploring the unique combination of nature and history in the Halle Ravine. As we traverse the scenic trails, participants will have the opportunity to learn about the ecological significance of the ravine, as well as its historical context and the stories that have shaped this special area over the years.

Local historians and naturalists will lead the discussion, highlighting the flora and fauna native to the region while also unraveling tales of the past that contribute to our understanding of Pound Ridge's heritage. Enjoy a leisurely walk suitable for all ages, bringing together community members interested in preserving both the natural landscape and the rich history of our local environment.

Please wear appropriate outdoor attire and footwear. We recommend bringing water and any personal items you may need for a comfortable hike. Join us for an enriching day of exploration and discovery in one of Pound Ridge's cherished natural spaces.

Lecture Series - How Food has Shaped New York’s History by Maureen Costura

How Food has Shaped New York’s History

Dr. Maureen Costura

Join us on Saturday, March 8th for a lecture by Dr. Maureen Costura, who will discuss how food and food production shaped the history of New York.

Dr. Costura is a professor at the Culinary Institute of America, where she teaches a diverse set of classes that focus on the archaeology and culture of food and foodways.  She holds an MA in Archaeology and a PhD in Anthropology with a subfield of Latin American Studies from Cornell University. Past research has focused on the archaeology of enslavement and the archaeology of the Caribbean and French colonial world. Current research focuses on popular depictions of societal and food chain collapse, as well as contributing to the archaeological work done at the Stone Hill Cemetery in Pound Ridge, NY. She is the author of several book chapters and articles, “Eating in the Time of the Dead: Farming, Foraging, and Food Insecurity in Zombie Cinema,” Food in Memory and Imagination, and “Access to First Choice Foods and Settlement Failure at French Azilum” for Archaeological Perspectives on the French in the New World.

Michael DiMinno has been a teacher, tutor and living historian for over 25 years. He holds a Master's degree in Education and spent the first 18 years of his career as a 4th grade teacher at a private school in Greenwich, CT. In 2020, he shifted to focusing more on remote teaching and has since run courses, camps and talks on history for learners all around the world. Michael’s personal collection of military uniforms and artifacts brings his lessons to life and he enjoys sharing his passion for history with learners of all ages!

Lecture: Chuck Griffith - Before There Was Mid (20th) Century Modern, There Was Mid (19th)Century Modern

Chuck Griffith will present an extensive talk on the Shakers, their history and lifestyle and their timeless designs.  Mr. Griffith has been making furniture since 1968, but became interested in the Shakers in the mid-1980's.  So interested that he learned how to hand-cut dovetails and make Shaker oval boxes. The making of Shaker furniture followed and much of his work has appeared in Fine Woodworking magazine.  In 2009 he was the winner of a competition on Shaker furniture sponsored by the magazine. He now makes furniture on commission. His work may be seen at www.shakertofit.com and a few pieces will be on display. Refreshments will be served.

Carol Kurth, FAIA, ASID, is an award-winning architect and interior designer who has been designing modern residential and commercial projects for more than 30 years. A Manhattan native, Ms. Kurth moved to Westchester in the early 1980’s and became a Partner in the architectural design and construction firm, Milowitz+Kurth, where she was integral to the emergence of modern architecture in Pound Ridge. 

Ms. Kurth founded her own architecture and interior design studio, Carol Kurth Architecture + Interiors in 1995. Her distinguished and award-winning body of residential and commercial work is notable for its elegant and imaginative integration of site, form, structure, and materials. Ms. Kurth is passionate about designing distinctive modern backdrops and she takes inspiration from nature and the built environment. 

This lecture examines the mid-century modern design movement as a backdrop for iconic furniture and lighting designs of the twentieth century.

Jacek Bigosinski has been a full-time faculty member at Norwalk Community College since 1989, where he currently is a Program Coordinator for Architecture, Interior Design and Construction programs. He was responsible for introducing Interior Design program at NCC in 2005. His professional experience includes work at: PB Architects Darien, CT. where he is responsible for architectural design, construction documents, specifications and site inspections of residential and commercial projects. He has been a Partner since 1991 and currently is the sole owner of the business with a full-time staff of four.

This lecture examines the American response to the International and Bauhaus movement: The Mid-Century modern architecture in the U.S.

David Hutchinson is an Associate Principal and lead designer in the architectural firm, Perkins Eastman. Along with architecture, David is an artist whose work emphasizes the synergies between language and visual presentation, particularly with respect to color. He has works in the permanent collection of the NY Public Library’s Spencer Collection, the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, and the Menil Collection. In this lecture he examines how the development of color theory and societal conditions culminated in two seemingly-opposed approaches to color and spatial applications in early modern architecture, as exampled by the works of Theo Van Doesburg and Le Corbusier.

Annual Meeting and Modern in Pound Ridge Exhibit Opening

Brief annual business meeting from 1:00 - 1:30pm awarding Hiram Halle Prize, reviewing of Annual Report and election of new Officers and Trustees.  Reception and Exhibition to follow. 

This brand new exhibition will open at the Pound Ridge Museum on April 23, 2017 and will showcase the arrival of Mid-century Modern architecture in our town, its impact on our landscape, and the influence these ground-breaking designs had on the Contemporary residential styles that followed. Some of the "movers and shakers" who called these Mid-century gems home will be highlighted, as well.
